Can Irritability Be a Sign of Low Blood Sugar in People with Diabetes?
Irritability can be an early and advanced sign of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in people with diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), low blood sugar can trigger mood changes, confusion, and even aggression, especially when blood sugar drops rapidly. If you notice sudden irritability, it’s important to check your blood sugar as this could indicate a hypoglycemic episode.
Why Does Hypoglycemia Cause Irritability?
When your blood sugar drops too low, your brain lacks the necessary glucose to function properly, leading to mood swings. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) highlights that severe hypoglycemia can also cause more dangerous symptoms, like seizures and unconsciousness, if left untreated.

If you are walking or moving more than normal be sure to have a snack including carbohydrates to compensate for the movements and exercise.
