how to set new diabetes goals

Set a Daily Intention: Start Your Best Blood Sugar Year Yet

diabetes mindset

As we enter the new year, it's easy to get caught up in the rush of managing your career, meeting family commitments, and staying on top of everyday tasks, potentially leaving your blood sugar management on the back burner.

What if I told you that setting a simple daily intention could be the key to making this your best blood sugar year yet?

I know that as a busy, high-achieving person, you don’t have time to waste on practices that don’t deliver results. That’s why I’m here to tell you that small shifts—like setting a daily intention—can have a huge impact on your mindset and your blood sugar levels.

How to Set a Daily Intention for Your Health

Choose Your Focus

Start your day by setting a simple intention. For example, you could decide to include two new vegetables in your meals to boost hydration and support healing. Try adding them to a smoothie, preparing easy grab-and-go snacks, or roasting them as a side dish. This small step can increase your fiber intake, improve nutrition, and make your meals more diabetes-friendly.

Another intention could be to add more movement to your day. You might take a short walk after lunch or park your car farther away at the grocery store.

Whatever intention you set, do it mindfully. This purposeful approach will bring you closer to your blood sugar goals.

Write It Down and Keep It Visible

Write down your intention where you’ll see it throughout the day—whether on your phone, in a planner, a sticky note on your desk, or on your fridge. Keeping it visible helps you stay on track and serves as a daily reminder of your focus.

Align Your Actions with Your Intention

Keep your intention in focus and make choices throughout the day that support it. For example, if your goal is to add more healing nutrients to reduce inflammation and support your body, plan ahead by preparing your meals and snacks in advance. If your intention is to move more, schedule time for a walk, run, bike ride, or yoga class. By aligning your actions with your intention, you’ll make it easier to achieve your goal.

Reflect and Adjust

Before bed, take a few minutes to reflect. Did you honour your body and your health with the intention you chose today?  What worked well, and where could you adjust for even more success each day?  This reflection solidifies the habit and helps you become more and more successful in achieving your goals.

Research published in the Journal of Positive Psychology found that people who set daily goals are more likely to experience a sense of accomplishment and are better equipped to meet their long-term health objectives.

This year, make your health a priority by setting a daily intention that aligns with your blood sugar goals. As a busy person living with diabetes, you understand that small, consistent actions lead to big results. Incorporating this practice into your routine will take you one step closer to making 2025 your best blood sugar year yet.
