Mental Clutter and Blood Sugar Spikes: A Hidden Diabetes Trigger
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this month, we're focusing on the vital connection between your mental health and your blood sugar. This week’s spotlight is on your mindset - specifically, how mental clutter and overwhelm quietly trigger blood sugar spikes.
Most people think of stress as something obvious, like a crisis or argument. However, one of the most overlooked drivers of chronic stress and unstable glucose is the everyday clutter in your mind.
How Mental Clutter Disrupts Blood Sugar
Your brain processes thousands of thoughts, decisions, and to-do lists each day. When you don’t have a system to clear the mental noise, your nervous system stays in a subtle, ongoing state of alert. That constant cognitive overload can:
- Keep cortisol levels elevated
- Increase blood sugar production
- Disrupt sleep and digestion
- Drain mental energy, making diabetes harder to manage
Research shows that even "low-grade" mental stress impacts insulin sensitivity and contributes to higher fasting blood sugar levels.
Your Mindset Tip: The Daily Brain Dump Practice
A powerful way to lighten your mental load and calm your nervous system is by using a simple technique called a Daily Brain Dump.
How to Do a Daily Brain Dump
Step 1: Choose a time (before bed or first thing in the morning works best).
Step 2: Grab a notebook and a pen.
Step 3: Set a timer for 5 minutes and write down everything on your mind—no filter, no order:
- Tasks
- Worries
- To-dos
- Random thoughts
Step 4: Close the notebook when the timer ends. You don’t need to organize it. The goal is to get it out of your head.
This practice gives your mind permission to let go and shifts your nervous system out of stress mode, helping to stabilize your blood sugar naturally.
