Understanding Diabetes

Types of Diabetes

Diabetes isn't a one-size-fits-all condition. It comes in various forms, with the two most common being:

Type 1 Diabetes: This autoimmune condition typically develops early in life and yet can occur at any age and requires lifelong insulin treatment.

Type 2 Diabetes: Often linked to lifestyle factors, it can develop any time in life however it is traditionally identified with those in mid to later life and is manageable with diet, exercise, and, in some cases, medication.

Rare Forms of Diabetes: As our team knows all too well, there are rare and lesser-known forms of Diabetes, each requiring specialized care and attention. It's essential to understand the type of Diabetes you or your loved ones have, as treatment approaches can differ significantly.

The Role of Holistic Medicine

As a Doctor of Holistic Medicine, I firmly believe in treating you as a whole person because Diabetes affects every part of your body - every tissue, cell, organ and system, so just treating the symptoms will do little for your long term health and healing.

The holistic approach embodies the best of natural and traditional medical therapies, offering a genuinely integrated strategy that encompasses the mind, body, and soul. This approach is rooted in prevention and proactive wellness, and I refer to it as the "Diabetes-Free lifestyle approach." It encompasses a wide spectrum of elements, including natural remedies, energy healing, nurturing a positive mindset, addressing mental and emotional well-being, Diabetes-friendly nutrition for optimizing blood sugar balance, stress management, promoting efficient insulin use through movement, and a rich array of alternative natural therapies and self-care practices.

The Wisdom of Experience

With over four generations of family members living with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, as well as living with Diabetes myself for over 28 years, it has personally taught me invaluable life-giving lessons. I’ve learned the importance of self-advocacy, resilience, and embracing a positive mindset - all of which help keep my sugars balanced nearly 100% of the time.  What’s more is how.

Preventing Diabetes Health Problems

Nutrition and Diet

Diabetes-friendly based nutrition is one of the pillars of my 4 step proprietary process for achieving the Diabetes-Free Lifestyle and lifelong blood sugar wellness.  Some of my favourite tried and true blood sugar-balancing recipes are here.  If you’ve been told that having Diabetes means giving up flavour and foods you love, well then let these recipes be the judge of that because I think you will love them and your taste buds will dance for sure!

Physical Activity

Regular exercise definitely helps increase your insulin efficiency which not only helps you lower and balance your blood sugar levels better, it also enhances overall well-being. It's all about doing an activity you enjoy and making it a part of your everyday life.  You don’t need a gym membership to experience success.  The movements in my Diabetes Success System that are proven to unlock insulin resistance can be done at home whether you are standing, sitting or lying down.

Regular Monitoring

Frequent monitoring of your blood sugar levels provide you with the intel on how well you are applying your new skills and tools for balancing your blood sugar levels. Having this guideline is essential for success in reaching your Diabetes wellness goals and your targeted blood sugar levels. It empowers you to make informed decisions and detect issues early so you can get in front of your numbers and get back in the driver's seat of your own health.

Medication and Treatment

In some cases, medication or insulin therapy may be necessary. This applies to only 6 -10% of people who have Type 1 or Type 1.5 Diabetes or Gestational Diabetes.  If you’d like to discover your options, I’d be happy to help you with that during a free Diabetes Wellness Connection Call.  Book your call right here.  Having the opportunity to ask your burning question and get your answer has created breakthroughs that people have been searching for years for, all in as little as 20 minutes.

Emotional Well-Being

Learning new skills to lower and balance your blood sugars can be emotionally challenging. Seeking support from mental health professionals, support groups, or friends and family.  There are nearly 2,000 members in my free private Facebook support group.  Join us and never feel like you’re in this alone again.

A Month of Empowerment

November is more than just Diabetes Awareness Month; it's a month of empowerment. By understanding the nuances of Diabetes, dispelling myths, and taking proactive steps to try new, proven, safe self-care practices can significantly reduce the risk of complications from affecting your life (and the 5-15 years that Diabetes steals from us). Let's work together to ensure that no one suffers from Diabetes health problems unnecessarily.

My mission is to guide you on your new wellness journey and break free from how Diabetes is affecting you and your life. We're here to provide you with the knowledge and support you need to live a fulfilling life while managing Diabetes effectively.

Together, we can make a difference and create a world where Diabetes complications are a rarity, not a reality.
